Yesterday Paxton and i filmed some of our school(target audience) to get feedback from them. to make the video a bit more interesting, i have edited in such way that yo can see their facial expressions when they are watching our film trailer with a bit of pop music playing in the background.

Making of the movie poster (Ancillary Task)

After me completing the magazine cover, I then started to work on the film poster as part of my coursework. I wanted to give it a similar look to the magazine but not too much. So in my mind, I had an idea of having a basic wall for the background but not fully visible, with some bullet shot hit. This way the audience would easy be able to identify what type of film genre this film is going to be, just by looking at the poster, as they say “movie poster sells, using its original image”

So again I plan to use Photoshop as it one of the most powerful image editing software you could possibly get. I am going to use the same image of Josh pointing a gun and Baxter looking mysteriously shocked. Because this is a poster I decided to include the villain as which in this case is Phil Eaton. So basically Josh will be pointing the gun at Phil.

To start of I added an image of a brick wall. I then turned that image into black and which and set the opacity to 92%. After I set the background to black, to give the vigilantes typical look. And then I used the Lasso tool to scrap it image around which gave it a very light smoky look, with a darker background.

Now is the time for me to add the 2 images of Josh and Baxter which I had already photoshoped. I placed them into their positions. And planned out where the title wound go. As I have researched many posters online, they mainly had their title name underneath the focused images. I decided to do the same and kept the title underneath the main image. However I didn’t like leaving the title with plain red, so I decided to add images of the main characters Josh, Baxter and Phil t he title. So what I did was created a black page, print screened a suitable image of each character. I added a copy of the brick wall in black and white. Made a copy of “vigilantes” title image as a layer, transformed it to set “multiply” this means another layer can overlay on top of the “vigilantes” layer which I though to put the main characters images on to it. With the black and white wall, so it does not look odd with the black background on the poster.

There are no main rules on if an extra image can go on a poster or not. So I decided to take picture of the alleyway where Baxter gets kidnapped by Phil and Photoshop it in such way so it will give a gloomy and horror look. This should make the audience a bit uncomfortable, thinking to them that alleyway is really a creepy place where as it actually is not. And I took a picture of Phil (the villain) and cropped his while body out so I could place him standing on that alleyway, where the audience first see his face from the trailer. I want the audience to feel as if the alleyway is the kind of place where Phil (the villain) likes to remain within. I then also set the opacity of Phil and the image of the alley way to 45% and 25%. This now looks like this.

Next up was the captions to the movie poster. I only had 3 main characters to this film so I decided to add their names above on the top of the page just above their heads. Using the house style of bright red, font size 30pt with the blending of Outer glow, this will give a bit of a highlight behind the text and will make it look really professional. Every action poster has some kind of dialogue which relates to the movie e.g. for the movie poster “Taken” its cheesy dialogue is:
They have taken his daughter
He will hunt them
He will find then
And he will kill them
So Jamie Paxton came with “Family is everything” which is agreed on and decided to put the text underneath the title.

The other elements which I include was the production details “Jatrix production presents an action film staring jousha hall, phlip Eaton and Cameron baxter from the producers of “aftermath” and “dont scream”in assocation with new line cinema, touchstone pictures and sumit entertainment” in a descending order. S at the bottom I added directed by me (Ahmed Mohammed) on the left hand corner and Produced by Jamie Paxton on the right hand corner, using the same house style.

Finally I created some fake bullet holes. At first it took me some time to figure out how to make them using some online tutorials, but then I eventually got it. What I did was, opened a blank image, set the background to black, used the rectangle tool to draw out one going downwards in white colour, clicked on filter>stylize>wind and then clicked ok. This will give sharp edges to the rectangle I have created. I then selected on image>rotate canvas>90 degree CW, then filter>distort>Polar Coordinates. This will turn the rectangle round with the sharp edges pointing outwards looking like a screen crack, I then clicked images>adjustments>invert. This will turn the image the opposite colours. Then to gain just the bullet hole, you use the magic wand tool and you click around the outer hole and select>inverse, you then just copy and paste the layer on to the poster, I made 3 different types of holes to make it looks realistic. So I added 5 bullet hopes to the movie poster. This completes the movie poster for “Vigilantes”

The making of the Film Magazine Cover (Ancillary Task)

For the past week, I have been working towards making a magazine cover for our film using Photoshop. Paxton and I decided using a unique name for the magazine, so we came up with “review” magazine with the sub heading of “exclusive interviews only with review magazine”. I then made a decision of tweaking the word “REVIEW”. So i removed the V and added a film clapper board instead, as it relates to movies. To make it look more professional i added “EXCLUSIVE” on top off it with the colour of red.

Because our film trailer looks pretty serious, i decided to give a black and white background using the gradient tool in Photoshop. So the black and white colours blend with each other equally.

I then added our films title name at the bottom of the page which is “VIGILANTES” with its original colour and font type. Because its font colour is neon red, I tend using the same red colour for the headings under the topics, as you normally see these days on a film magazine cover, which in my magazine is “Hot News” and Top Tips”. Underneath the two headings i added really cheesy news that would make the reader to the actual article that is directed by a page number printed below the news.

The next thing i added to the magazine cover is the one of the main elements the image. This is what a reader first looks at, as it is big and it sells the film from it. So Jamie and I took some pictures of Baxter and Joshua at a mid range shot using an 8.5 megapixel digital camera at the time of daylight. We wanted such pose that will make the reader understand of the type of genre the film is, so we told josh to point a gun at one of his sides. And we told Baxter to make curious facial expression. So we basically wanted the reader to understand that this is an action based film. We decided not to include Phil because he is a villain and is not really important for the front cover of a film magazine.

Then using Photoshop I carefully cropped both the images out using the pen tool and started playing around the Brightness/Contract tool, after turning the image into black and white. To give a professional look I added some light feather effect around both images using the lasso tool.

I then still though there is something missing, so then I went over to the internet and started browsing for film magazine covers to see what other elements they all contain. And realised they all have a barcode, issue number/date and an extra headline mainly at the bottom of the page. So then I searched for a barcode from Google images and pasted/adjusted till it fitted on the side of the magazine cover, I added a suitable date of when the magazine was published underneath the magazines title which is “REVIEW” and made up and issue number and placed it next to the barcode.

Now if have closer look at the different types of font style I used on the magazine covers are uniquely different. There is Bolts SF for the headings for each in strong red bold and New Times Roman for the headline in the colour white. I purposely have picked some words from the sentences in bold so it makes the reader focus more onto the word itself more than the actual sentence, for example “DISCOVER HOW TO GET RIPPED LIKE JASON STATHAM”. So the reader will automatically be dragged onto the words “RIPPED and JASON STATHAM” and so are more likely to read the article further on. House style makes the reader/audience recognise the magazine layout and it consistently.

Finally I noticed that most of the film magazines have some kind of Free! Stuff inside such as an internet link where the reader could log on to a site and play interactive games that links to the film. So I decided to add a “FREE VIGILINTES FILM POSTER INSIDE” text in a different layout with a little rotation. I first created a circle using the ellipse tool, with inner colour active, so the inner side of the circle gets filled with the colour which I used red again to give it as consistent and a unique look. I transformed the “FREE” word is in a semi circle layout outside the circle which I created. And inside I added the following text “VIGILIANTES FILM POSTER!”

Lastly I added “COMING THIS SUMMER” with the New Times Roman to tell the audience that this film will be releasing this summer so they can go to the cinema. I have rotated this text diagonally just on the bottom right of the movie’s title name “VIGILANTES” by go to Edit>Free Transform. If you look carefully at the text “COMING THIS SUMMER” is symmetrical to Joshua’s arm. I have done this on purpose so the text does not look odd one out from the other text as this is the only text that has been rotated except the “FREE VIGILINTES FILM POSTER INSIDE” which is mainly targeted for the appropriate audience which is teenagers 13-18 years old.

Here is what the final product looks like:

Using Voice Over for our film trailer

As Paxton and i decided that we are going to be using a Voice Over for our film trailer. We now have a perfect sound for it. The voice over was done by our villain from our film trailer, Phil. After weeks for searching for a good voice, we didn’t realise that our villain had such an excellent and convincing voice that we could use for our trailer.

So 2 days ago, i told Phil to do some voice recording using a sound editing Program called Cool Edit Pro. And here is where i recorded his voice. So i wrote the dialogue with a bit of help from Phil the main man himself. And these were the dialogue he had to say:
"One man, who will stop nothing to save his kin
No ordinary boy
No ordinary school
This summer, discover the lengths that a father will go for his only son
A film starring Joshua Hall
Vigilante
Coming Soon....... "

If we feel we have to add more to it, we surely will, however for the time being, we are sticking with this.

First day of filming

On Sunday, we finally started filming around the lake in the school campus. At first it started raining but then, the sun came out and made it a suitable for us to actually film. Some of our actors were not available except for Josh, one of our main characters. So Jamie and I decided to take some different angled shots such as tracking shot, mid shot, low angle shots and close up shots of just him, this way we can have his introduction to the audience instead of wasting time to wait for other characters to turn up. As we were filming we also took some pictures behind the scene.

Analysing a magazine cover

Today I had been researching about what kind of magazine covers look good, and what kind of elements are needed in order to attract the audience. After spending some time I had found an excellent piece of magazine that is fully analysed, and that it would help me to make my own magazine cover.

Spray Painting a fake gun

Today my aim was to get a fake bb gun which I own, spray painted. This is because its original colour was neon blue. Luckily one of my teachers had a mat black spray paint that I used. This is one of the major props that are needed in our film trailer. We are stilling going to use more guns if possible. However the other gun belongs to one of my other teachers in school, and we will be supervised while using then to film.

Weather Predictions for our filming days

We were planning to start filming on Thursday, 10th November. But it seems like that it is very likely to be raining heavily on that day, so now we have postponed the days to Saturday or even Sunday. Even though on Saturday it is going to be raining with light showers. And it’s going to be a sunny day on Sunday as predicted.

“Sunny intervals and scattered showers for Friday and Saturday and Sunday these turning more and more wintry.”

Permission Granted to shoot at the drama theatre and the use of the vehicle

I have been given the permission to use the drama theatre to shoot the scene by the head of Drama department and the vehicle owner, Mr Williams. The reason I wanted to ask permission is because I do not want to use any locations where it is already booked for the day by somebody else especially drama theatre as many students do go there for rehearsals. And obviously it is vital to seek permission for the car owner which luckily is his as well.

Out of all the cars, Paxton and I found this car the best, that we though would really suit the character. This is because this car is kind of the car a supper hero in an action genre would be using. It has its unique and dashing looks. Also, because the character is very stylish, Paxton and I though to use a very stylish looking vehicle, as this was the best we could find. I will be uploand pictures of the drama theatre and the vehicle soon !

To use the car, Mr Williams has dictated that he himself will have to drive the vehicle, so Ahmed and I have decided that we will solve this conumdrum by filming first Josh and Orcy getting into the car. Then Mr Williams will drive off at an angle where you cannot see the driver of the car, making it seem like Josh and Orcy are in the car when it is going.

Location Shots

Today, I and Jamie Paxton have been taking some pictures of the locations we are planning to film. For the fighting scene we are planning to use the theatre. This is because there is basically everything there which we require, e.g. lighting effects, big space long black curtains for background and a very modern theatre.

In the story we are going to show the main characters journey from a jungle type looking place to as decent place where are living people, vehicles and houses where he ends up around the modern building (school theatre) where we plan to includes a bit of a fighting scene.

Secondary Research on our audience

Today I have been surfing through at Pearl and Dean’s website to find the right secondary audience for our film trailer.

Recently there have been a lot of discussions of which type of cinema ads are the best, 30 seconds versus 60 seconds ads, and why would it be better for a particular audience. They have spoken to a mixture of male and females aged around 15-54 from different regions of the country with a mixed preference of film genres. I have learnt that you should identify the key components of successful cinema ads, such as Subway ad which is 30 seconds long. You mush use different techniques to attract the audiences to make an impact at them as well as to enjoy. Cinema ads are seen as the most creative, entertaining and innovate ads of all. These are the comments made by some of the audiences ““much more memorable” “more entertaining than the dross that gets on the TV” “they try to impress more” “seem to have less stringent constraints on time and content”

The four elements of cinema ads are Visual, Sound, Pizzazz and Length.

Visual: consumers notice when cinema ads make real use of the big screen with impressive graphics, panoramic landscapes and unusual visual displays
• Sony Bravia : Balls and Paint
• “I first saw this at the cinema and it had a big impact on me, when the screen is big you can see it all in so much more detail”
• Coca Cola: Vending Machine Factory
“It’s really cinematic and creative; it looks great on the big screen”

Sound: he surrounds sound and booming bass are key parts of the cinema experience and the best ads use these to the max
“Taking advantage of the surround sound is a must”
“A great soundtrack is a bonus to any ad but when you hear it in the cinema it sounds so much more exciting”
Part of feeling immersed and absorbed in a really great ad can be largely down to the use of sound

Pizzazz: unsurprisingly, the expense of a cinema visit creates high expectations for the experience – including the ads. It's essential that they tap into the mood and mindset of cinema goers “cinema ads should be special and different - a touch different to the TV versions ideally”

Lenghts: Reactions to the 60sec ads were consistently more positive than to the 30sec ads “I liked it most, mainly because it's longer than the other ads we've seen so far”
The 60s ads were more engaging from beginning to end
A better sense of ‘story' - “the longer ones seem to build more of a climax – you don't get that with the shorter ones”
The story line was better understood and remembered more accurately for the 60sec ads, indicating higher levels of engagement
Consumers took a more complex level of messaging from the 60sec ads than from the 30sec ads
The 60sec ads had greater levels of claimed talk ability
The 60sec ads had a more positive effect on perceptions of brand image and potential consideration than the 30sec ads that we showed

The image below shows favourite film genres by males and females in different regions. It shows that most of then do like comedy and action thriller as their favourite genres which is our film trailer is based on.

Risk Assessment for filming at various locations

Today I have been filling out a risk assessment form, which shows all the hazards, the people that are likely to be harmed while filming, how severe could the harm be, the different kinds of controls we are going to have at different locations, how likely the accidents are going to occur and it also includes a risk rating, which in our case is pretty low, as we are going to be organised and will be carrying a first aid kit and a mobile phone for emergency purposes. Please click on the picture below.

Five Key Scenes That We Need To Show

1. We need an establishing scene to be shown, to start off the story, maybe like Josh choosing to take some time off work and a shot of him and Graham doing something father and son like, perhaps with a voiceover.

2. Then we need to show a few shots which give the impression of Graham being kidnapped and Josh’s grief at this situation. – This being the disequilibrium in the story

3. After this we should have several shots which suggest Josh and Orcy searching for Graham outside of the law

4. There should also be some of the conventional action scenes such as fighting, car chasing, perhaps an explosion or some gun fighting scenes.

5. There should be some shots which create suspense and make the audience want to go and see the film, these will resolve into the title shot, with the date the movie is coming out and perhaps the production company.

Institutions that might produce distribute and exhibit our film.

Today I have been researching to find the best intuitions that are most likely to produce distribute and exhibit our film that match the genre/storyline type.

After some time I found out that 20th century fox is an institution that have been producing, distributing and exhibiting films since 1910s. And is one of the 6th major American film studios in 2010. Its main headquarters is in Los Angeles, California, America.

It produced some supper hit movies in the past such as, Die Hard 2 (1990), Rapid Fire (1992), Robin Hood (1993), The Chase (1994) and Taken (2009).

Another intuition film company i though would be great to produce our film is Touchstone Pictures. This is because the type of storyline moves it had distributed and exhibited are very similar to our film storyline. E.g. Ransom is one of the great movies Touchstone Picture have produced, Me and Jamie are planning to create similar storyline because it’s very popular and our target audience really do attract the type of genre and storyline we are going to make a trailer off. Touchstone Picture are well known for releasing typical features of mature themes then those that are released under the Walt Disney Picture banner, as it is one of several alternative film label of the Walk Disney Company. Its headquarters is also in California, America.

It has produced action thrilling type movies such as, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), the insider (1999) Gone in 60 seconds (2000) Pearl Harbour (2001) and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)
